Residents seek to change METRO rail plans in the MacGregor area

Mac Gregor area residents in Super Neighborhood 68 are trying to convince the Metropolitan Transit Authority not to go ahead with its plan to run light rail on Martin Luther King Blvd. Residents cite safety concerns for area school children. Currently, neither MTA nor the City of Houston have policies that address registered sex offenders riding on the same public transportation school childern might ride or have to come in close proximity to.

Residents also argue that rail along Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. would defile Houston's only public symbol that marks the legacy of Dr. King, as well as the City's Black Community's civil rights struggle that still exists today.

Specifically, residents are not opposed to rail, but are asking that the rail be re-routed to the back side of the MacGregor Neighborhoods, as a less invasive and cheaper alternative to the current METRO plan.

Some local opponents have suggested that residents become proactive in an organized effort to Let Metro know that if it goes ahead with the unwanted rail plan, a boycott of the ridership would derail any rational reason for wasting taxpayer's money.
